Carnival Cruise Lines recently grabbed the attention of the world when it hand an unfortunate accident. Just a few days after the Carnival Triumph left its Galveston port, an engine fire destroyed part of the ship. Passengers who were looking forward to a few days in paradise found themselves in a few days in hell instead. Photos shared on Instagram and other social media outlet captured not only deplorable conditions and food rationing, but the distress of the passengers on board.

We're not always in control of our circumstances. Bad things happen to good people, tragedies strik and sometimes life suddenly gets harder than we imagined it could.

What makes all the difference is how you handle it. So I'd like to share with you -- and any Carnival Triumph passengers reading this -- a few tips on staying grounded when seas get rough.

Take a Breath

Never underestimate the power of breath to center you. Take slow, controlled inhales and exhales every time you feel panic or anxiety flare up. You can't make sound decisions about what to do next when in the grip of anxiety or panic. Just keep breathing until you can think a little more clearly.

Remember, Things Could Be Worse

Try listing a few scenarios drastically worse than the one you're in now. Get to five and you may begin to get some perspective on your current situation. Life may be handing out lemons now, but it could be doling out something much harder to deal with.

What Are You Grateful for in This Moment?

For many of my readers, this is a moment to turn to their faith. What are you blessed with that has been untouched by this recent turn of events. Meditate on those blessings for a few moments and let them fill you with gratitude. You'll often find a silver lining if you venture to step out of your circumstances and look.

Create a Support Network

Whether you're on the deck of a disabled Carnival Cruise liner or in a hospital waiting room, support isn't far away. Share your troubles with friends or family members who traditionally offer support and understanding. If your crisis is bigger than commiseration can handle, take your troubles to a licensed psychiatrist, counselor or congregation leader to help guide and support you through this difficult period.

Acknowledge the Crossroads

In any crisis there are two paths that you can take: action and patience. If you lose your job, focus on writing down concrete steps to help you get another in record time. If you are trapped on a Carnival Cruise liner, there's not much you can do but have patience and try to make the best of a situation; in other situations, you may have to let it hurt. Remind yourself of the path you chose when anxiety and panic rear their ugly heads again.

Dr. Sharon Iglehart

You have the strength to tackle any obstacles that life throws in your path. But when life seems overwhelming, never be afraid to reach out a hand for help. An appointment with a licensed mental health practitioner can give you perspective and firmer ground to stand on -- even if you don't think you need it.
